PCOS Renamed PMOS: Understanding Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovary Syndrome
The name polycystic ovary syndrome has been renamed polyendocrine metabolic ovary syndrome as this description and name better fit the nature, signs and symptoms of the condition that we have previously called polycystic ovary syndrome.
Polycystic ovary syndrome is basically a change in the secretion of a hormone called GnRH, which starts at puberty and results in periods that are irregular, variable in amount and can be associated with metabolic disorders, especially prediabetes, excess male hormone, which can lead to acne and facial hair and finally interference with the normal process of ovulation, which can result in irregular periods and infertility.
The previous name of polycystic ovary syndrome implies that the primary abnormality is in the ovaries. As mentioned, the primary abnormality is in the part of the brain called the hypothalamus, which controls a lot of normal bodily functions. This abnormality of the pulsing of a hormone called GnRH results in a different balance of pituitary hormones and all the subsequent symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome. Therefore, it can impact reproductive, metabolic and psychological health and can significantly interfere with issues related to quality of life.
The new name of PMOS better describes the multiorgan system involvement with polycystic ovary syndrome and better explains the resultant symptoms.
Associate Professor Len Kliman has a long history of treating and discussing PMOS with patients of all ages.
