A miscarriage is defined as a spontaneous loss of a fetus before the 20th week of pregnancy.
We define recurrent miscarriage or recurrent pregnancy loss in those women who experience three or more consecutive miscarriages.
Approximately 2- 3% of women will experience a recurrent miscarriage.
Causes or contributing factors can include:
- Unknown (idiopathic)
- Structural abnormalities of the uterus
- Genetic disorders
- Immunological problems
- Maternal age
Whilst a miscarriage in not uncommon, it is important that specific investigations and tests are performed to rule out some of the above-mentioned conditions.
Some tests may include:
- Blood tests on the woman and her partner which may include genetic testing/karyotype
- Hysteroscopy to evaluate the uterine cavity
- Uterine biopsy to test the lining of the uterus
Dr Kliman will discuss all of the available tests and investigations and discuss which tests are best for your situation. He will then work out an appropriate plan for a future pregnancy.
